Amazon India on Thursday said it will shut down its online learning portal for high school students in August 2023 without giving any reason. The Amazon Academy platform was launched in January 2021 to help students prepare for the “JEE (Joint Entrance Examination)” amid a surge in virtual learning due to the pandemic.

The company said that the full fee will be refunded to students enrolled in the current academic session.

Amazon.com said in a statement that the platform will be phased out to care for current customers.

The development comes amid a boom in the Indian edtech industry, where many companies are under pressure as schools, colleges and coaching centers reopen as Covid-19 restrictions are eased.

Last month, edtech giant ByJuice said it would lay off 2,500 workers amid pressure from investors to become profitable. Other players like Unacademy, Topper, Whitehat Junior and Vedantu have also announced layoffs.

Amazon said that students will have access to the entire course material for a year until October 2024.

“The online preparation offering will prepare students for JEE with in-depth knowledge and practice routines, curated study materials, live lectures and comprehensive assessments in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry,” Amazon said while launching the Amazon Academy platform.
