Kolkata, Nov 9 (IANS): The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday issued a strong cautionary note to the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE) and threatened to cancel the new primary teacher recruitment exam scheduled to be held on November 14 if the board did not comply with the uniform rules. Qualified in 2014 and 2017 exams.
Recently, as the merit list of those who appeared in the 2017 exams has been published, the candidates who secured 82 out of 150 marks in the written exam are shown as qualified. However, the same principle was not followed in the case of merit list 2014.
A bench of Justice Avijit Gangopadhyay earlier observed that the candidates who scored 82 out of 150, i.e. 54.7 per cent, should be counted towards the scheduled qualifying marks of 55 per cent of the recruitment exams.
However, on Wednesday, Justice Gangopadhyay observed that while this principle was followed in the case of those appearing for the 2017 exam, it was not followed in the case of those appearing in 2014. When this came to his attention on Wednesday, he was upset.
“Earlier I had said that there would be no obstacle to fresh exams. But now I will be forced to retract that statement. I will have to order cancellation of the exam if it is found to be violating the board norms,” he said.
The WBBPE counsel told the court that the board’s declaration that those who scored 82 out of 150 in the examination would be declared qualified would be made by November 10.
Justice Gangopadhyay was also displeased with the board’s approach to fresh recruitment to 269 posts lying vacant following the termination of service of illegal recruits as per Calcutta High Court orders. The WBBPE challenged that decision of the Calcutta High Court in the Supreme Court, but the board’s plea was dismissed by the Supreme Court. After that the board issued notification for recruitment to those 269 posts, which will be withdrawn later.
