In New York State, regular vision screenings are required and offered by schools at no charge. As children grow, their eye development changes and their vision and ability to see is affected.
While children can receive free vision screenings at school as part of New York State education law, a more comprehensive exam may be an option parents may want to consider.
Experts say that 80% of learning involves the eyes, be it reading, writing or watching a video screen. About 25% of children need some form of support when it comes to better vision.
Dr. Richard Malara said. An optometrist’s exam will scrutinize more than 20 things that could be a problem, he said.
“Color vision, depth perception. We check eye pressure for glaucoma risk, we also evaluate their binocularity, so their eye muscle movement, balance, coordination. We check if they see in three dimensions, so their eyes are working properly,” Central New York Optometry Society President Dr. . Richard Malara said.
Malara said most insurances cover a child’s eye examination once a year. He said one of the things doctors check for is myopia, also known as nearsightedness.
Medical experts predict that by 2050, more than 50 percent of the world’s population will be nearsighted due to the increasing use of computers, tablets, and phones.
Malara said he’s been busier at the Liverpool and Fayetteville offices over the past few weeks, so making an appointment as soon as possible is your best bet.
