Ford (F) – Get a free report is recalling more than 450,000 F-150 trucks due to a wiper problem.
The automaker has recalled 453,650 trucks from the 2021 and 2022 model years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
According to preliminary reports, the windshield wiper motor may not operate, which may cause reduced visibility or loss of visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
The main reason why wipers work poorly is damage to the wiper motor integrated circuit board due to high transient voltage and poor quality wiper motor electrical terminals.
This population excludes vehicles built at the company’s Dearborn, Mass., truck plant between May 3, 2021, and September 10, 2021, because they were built with a different wiper motor.
Previous recall related to windshield wiper
Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have the wiper motor replaced. There is no charge for the service.
Dealers should report on January 3rd. Notification of owners should begin on the same date and be completed by January 6.
Ford said it is not aware of any injuries or crashes related to the problem. The company says the error could be about 1% of the total number of cars.
The recall follows Ford’s earlier actions involving windshield wipers. In March, the company recalled 157,306 F-150 pickups due to a problem with the windshield wipers.
The affected vehicles were built between January 8, 2020 and March 22, 2021 at the Dearborn Truck Plant and between February 12, 2020 and March 22, 2021 at the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Mo.
The F-150 has been a big seller for Ford. Kelley Blue Book reported last month that U.S. consumers bought 167,962 units of the F-150 pickup in the third quarter, outselling 31 brands, including Stellantis. (STLA) – Get a free report Jeep, Nissan (NSANY) and Tesla (TSLA) – Get a free report.
