There’s a lot to like about the Ford Transit Connect, but speed isn’t one of them—it was designed to haul people and gear, not, well, you know. The odd and awesome exception to this rule is currently listed on the Cars & Deals page with an engine and transmission from the Focus ST.
Visually, the main evidence that this is not an ultra-modern van is the set of 18-inch alloy wheels on the Focus ST. Open the hood and the full extent of its design is revealed: This 2014 Transit Connect XLT is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s bolted to a six-speed manual transmission. According to the auction description, both are from a 2014 Focus ST. The engine produces 252 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque in standard configuration, but this van has a Cobb Tuning “Stage 2” tune for extra power.
For context, the unchanged 2014 Transit Connect XLT uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 169 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission; Ford offered a city-friendly van with a manual in Europe, but the three-pedal unit was never made available in the United States. The folks who built this van didn’t stop at the swap: this Transit Connect features a Mishimoto intercooler, Cobb Tuning exhaust, and Eibach lowering springs, among many other modifications.
Inside, it’s like an upside-down coat: party up front, with leather-trimmed Recaro seats courtesy of the same Focus ST that donated its engine, and business in the back, with cloth-upholstered seats that fold and tilt for cleaning. plenty of trunk space.
While completing an engine swap is never easy, this transplant appears to be relatively easy (“relatively” being the key word here) as the Transit Connect and Focus ride on the same basic C-Car platform. This also partly explains why everything seems to fit together surprisingly well; It’s almost as if this van has a factory Focus ST drivetrain, and we think the look of the sleeper boosts the cool factor.
