Harrison Ford describes the various challenges facing the Duttons in 1923: “They might lose everything within a season” | Rare Techy

Although we have known that in 1923 for the spinoff series Yellowstone for a while now, there are still very few details about what we can expect before the December 18th premiere.
We know the show has a star-studded cast, with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren leading the way as Jacob and Cara Dutton during the end of Prohibition, the Great Depression, the emergence of a deadly disease, and the construction of the modern-day Dutton Ranch.
James and Margaret Dutton are out of the picture, but their children and grandchildren carry on their legacy, led by James’ brother Jacob and his wife Cara, who is now known to be an Irish immigrant.
According to a new interview, Mirren lobbied for Cara to be of Irish descent Vanity Fair:
“I see Cara as an immigrant. One thing I really wanted was for her to speak Irish, not an American accent.
I’m always slightly annoyed by westerns that all these people speak with modern American accents, when in fact many of them were fairly recent immigrants.
The great Irish immigration to America due to the potato famine was in the late 19th century. It totally chronologically works for Cara. We imagine he is now in his late 60s. So she would have come, I think, as a young woman from Ireland.
I think that’s one of the extraordinary elements of America. The people who arrived and are still coming here are people with tremendous resilience, tremendous courage and independence.
As for Ford’s character Jacob Dutton, he’s now the head of the family:
“He’s the silverback. He’s in charge of this branch of the family.
These are two people who have a very strong bond with each other and are facing really difficult circumstances.
Ford also noted that Jacob and Cara have been married for four decades up to this point, and at this point, they are everything to each other:
Their lives are completely entangled with each other. Apart from themselves and the hard work and investment they put into their future and family, they have very little to support them.
It is a tough life and it is full of not only physical but also moral challenges.
Ford also added that we can expect the same ruthlessness we see from Dutton’s cars Yellowstone now, it stems from the family’s brutal trek west 1883:
“You’re very close here. The story is told very honestly and directly. There’s no apology for what needs to be done. There’s a very strong moral context that’s… fragile.
The Duttons follow a self-imposed code of conduct that requires complex moral and ethical judgements. It’s not just physical life that’s hard.
Modern challenges, challenges to their way of life, the freedom and opportunities they have enjoyed, are a big part of the story. The impending depression and all the pressures, both economic and social, lead to this very volatile time in American history.
But at the end of the day, they all know that everything they’ve worked so hard for can be over in a second. They may own land and have early settler status in the area, but make no mistake…these Duttons are not rich.
Ford continues:
“They can lose everything in a season. They’re faced with changes in the weather, the economy, the influx of railroads, and changes in ranching. It’s a difficult time. It’s a volatile time. They’re land-rich but cash-poor because everything is put back into the business, into the ranch.
It’s hard to fight for everything. I don’t consider them rich. I think they have a certain power based on their historical presence in the area based on hard work.
And in closing, Ford said the show is a testament to the country’s strong development during one of its most difficult times:
“I feel like a lot of America is unfinished business. It’s the story of how a country has evolved, and the nature and personality of that country is largely a product of the circumstances of that period.
Can December 18th get here soon enough?
1923 year Cast
The Dutton Family:
Harrison Ford plays his brother Jacob Dutton at Tim McGraw 1883 character Jacob Dutton.
Helen Mirren takes on the role of Jacob’s wife, Cara Dutton.
James Badge Dale plays John Dutton Sr., Jacob’s oldest nephew and right-hand man. He is the son of James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and the great-grandfather of John Dutton (Kevin Costner).
Marley Shelton plays Emma Dutton, wife of John Dutton Sr. and mother of Jack Dutton.
Darren Mann plays Jack Dutton, son of John Sr. and Emma and grandson of Jacob Dutton. He is a hardworking rancher and devoted to the Dutton name.
Brandon Sklenar plays Spencer Dutton, Jacob Dutton’s nephew and John Dutton Sr.’s brother.
Additional characters:
Jerome Flynn, aka Bronn from Game of Thrones, played by Banner Creighton, a hard-nosed Scottish brogue and leader of the local shepherds. He seems to have the makings of a bad guy?
Robert Patrick takes on the role of Sheriff William McDowell, a friend of the Dutton family.
Michelle Randolph plays Elizabeth Strafford, a feisty woman willing to do anything to marry into the Dutton family.
Brian Geraghty plays the loyal ranch foreman on the show.
Aminah Nieves plays Teonna Rainwater, a young woman living in a public boarding school. Judging by the last name, he is probably related to Thomas Rainwater Yellowstone.
Julia Schlaepfer plays Alexandra, a British woman who meets one Dutton while abroad.
Jennifer Ehle plays Sister Mary O’Connor, an Irish nun.
Former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton plays Donald Whitfield, a “wealthy and nefarious” man who appears to be an enemy of the Dutton family.
Still, I can’t wait to see how it all comes together in December.
Dutton Pedigree
In this 1893 retrospective from yellowstone season 4, we see that James has two sons with her, John Sr. and Spencer (who are both the main characters of the film in 1923)… Second generation.
By then they should be in their forties in 1923 rolls around and has kids of their own including Jack Dutton (third generation) and John Sr. and Spencer may even have little grandchildren (people married pretty young back then) so that’s the fourth generation.
Now this is where it gets interesting… John Dutton III (born sometime in the 1950’s) of Yellowstone would be fifth generation, which means Kayce, Jamie (adopted), the late Lee Dutton and Beth Dutton would all be sixth generation and young. Tate would be the 7th generation.
And this is exactly what Tim McGraw himself has confirmed.
Tim says he plays John Dutton’s great-great-grandfather in the Blu-ray extras:
“I play John Dutton’s great-great-grandfather. Our family is the first to discover Yellowstone and establish it. And in doing that, we’re the first to really protect it and fight it with people and try to establish it and then survive.
JD is the patriarch of the family. I guess he’s the guy who had the balls to set off and move his family across the country and head to Montana, populate that unknown land, that untamed land up there and make something of it.
Of course, which Dutton generation affects the show, since the season finale 1883, Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) is on the brink of death, and her father James Dutton (Tim McGraw) must find a place to bury her, because wherever her body is buried, the Dutton family will settle.
So the parent crow recommends the Spotted Eagle for a place called Paradise Oriole.
But here’s the catch… the Duttons can’t have it forever.
“Yes, paradise. Good name. But you know this: in seven generations my people will rise up and take it back from you.
To which James says:
“In seven generations you will get it.”
