A hat-trick between half a dozen scalps for Henry Shipley led Canterbury to a powerful Ford Trophy win over Wellington on Tuesday.
The right-arm seamer plowed through the Firebirds’ batting line-up as the hosts were dismissed for 165 in just 28.1 overs in reply to Canterbury’s 267-8 at Basin Reserve 2022/23. in the opening match of the men’s one-day competition. .
It was the fourth hat-trick in 52 years of the competition and the first for Canterbury.
The 26-year-old entered the game with a domestic one-day bowling average of 57.32, but improved his numbers a lot by taking 6-40 from eight overs.

Bowling the first innings, Shipley made the initial breakthrough in Wellington’s chase, removing opener Rachin Ravindra and also picking up the wicket of Troy Johnson.
Soon after, he dismissed Tim Robinson, Lauchie Johns and Luke Georgeson on successive balls. Black Caps Test wicketkeeper/batsman Tom Blundell had bowled Wellington before Shipley’s first wicket, but when he fell for just 35 off 58 balls (eight fours and two sixes), Wellington lost six wickets in just 29 runs.
Ollie Newton struck bravely late on to make 44 off 25 balls (three sixes and five fours).
Earlier, Canterbury’s middle order lifted them to a competitive total, with Leo Carter hitting an unbeaten 67 off 76 balls in the 6th over.
New Zealand’s ODI wicketkeeper Latham – who is in action against India in the three-match series starting in Auckland on Friday – smashed 59 off 70 balls in the 4th while All Blacks Henry Nicholls added 23, Cole McConchie 40, Matt.
