JACKSONVILLE, NC (WITN) – The State Bureau of Investigation says the person killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday was a young boy.
The shooting happened after police chased a car down a busy Jacksonville street.
Chief Mike Yaniero said that just before 5:00 p.m., officers saw a car cross the center turn lane of Western Boulevard and turn into oncoming traffic.
Officers then activated their lights and siren and attempted to stop the vehicle, the chief said. After a short search, the vehicle crashed on Kolan Spi.
Yaniero said there was an “armed confrontation, away from the car” and an officer shot one of the people inside the vehicle.
He later died at Camp Lejeune Naval Medical Center, the chief said.
Yaniero said a gun was recovered at the scene and that an officer is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an SBI investigation into the fatal shooting.
Yaniero would not release the names of those involved or say whether the dead boy fired the gun.
“Again, this is an SBI case and I cannot answer those questions until they complete their investigation,” the chief said.
