With the second pick of the 2020 NBA draft and the help of a tutor and three study group sessions, James Wiseman failed to make significant strides toward finding minutes in Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors’ bench rotation.
Introduction to the NBA Class of 2020-21 Professor Kerr, struggling for health reasons during the required course, assigned his gifted student to the G League for additional requirements instruction.
Steve Kerr pointed out that James Wiseman’s stint in the G League isn’t just about getting some game action for the Golden State Warriors youngster.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Warriors’ loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday, Kerr explained that practice is just as important, if not more, than game time.
“Training is a big thing. “I think when you get individual attention like the guys in the G League do, it’s easier to make more progress, instead of the stops and starts that happen during the NBA season when you’re not in the rotation,” Kerr said.
Assessing his three years in the league so far, Kerr wrote this note in the margins of Wiseman’s examination.
“I think it’s just part of the natural evolution of a young player who doesn’t have a lot of experience when the pandemic started and he missed a year and a half with injury. That’s it, that’s the bottom line. “
Tuesday’s game wasn’t Wiseman’s best effort as a Santa Cruz Warrior. On the second night of a back-to-back with an active roster of eight players available, the game turned ugly in the second half. After beating the Salt Lake City Stars the night before, the Warriors went down 128-97 in a disappointing performance. Wiseman had 15 points and eight rebounds on 7-for-9 shooting and posted a team-high plus-minus of -2.
The 21-year-old is now averaging 16 points and 7.7 rebounds in three games for Santa Cruz. Some suggested that Wiseman be left in Santa Cruz for longer than the originally announced ten days. Wiseman’s game needs to work in as stress-free an environment as possible before he returns to City via the Bay and the expectations of the media and fans.
