With schools already having to contend with Eskom’s power cuts and protests in various parts of the country, parents in the province should not worry about further disruptions on Thursday, Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier said.
CAPE TOWN – Matric exams in the Western Cape will not be affected by Thursday’s strike by civil servants.
This is the promise from the province’s education department after receiving assurances from education unions in the country that their members will not be absent from work on Thursday.
A long-standing disagreement over the wage hike of thousands of government employees is now coming to a head.
With schools already having to contend with Eskom’s power cuts and protests in various parts of the country, parents in the province should not worry about further disruptions on Thursday, Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier said.
“The teachers unions have assured us that they will not participate in the strike, so our examination conduct in schools should not be affected. We have contingency measures in place in case any public sector officials decide to participate in the strike.”
The MEC is asking the unions to keep their word.
“We should treat our matrics as VIPs for the remaining few weeks of the exam. So far, the matric exams have proceeded without much incident. May it continue to be so.”
