WASHINGTON — This month, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it has awarded 12 fellows under the Human Resource Disposal (RAD) Program for outstanding achievements in waste recycling. The honors were announced as EPA marked the program’s 16th year of implementation with the third annual RAD Partner Awards, held recently as part of the RAD Partner Annual Conference Meeting.
“RAD Partners continues to inspire us to go above and beyond with their equipment recycling efforts to protect the ozone layer, fight climate change, and reduce unnecessary earthquakes, while supporting the health of communities,” said Joe Goffman, Deputy Principal Assistant Administrator for the Air and Space Administration. “It is an honor to celebrate the RAD Leadership Award Winners of 2022. These fellows lead by example, demonstrate creativity and collaboration, and demonstrate high standards and levels of processing. in a safe place of equipment.”
For 16 years, partners in EPA’s RAD program have used the best environmental practices to collect and dispose of old refrigeration equipment such as refrigerators and freezers, window treatments, and air conditioners. In an effort to save the equipment foam, RAD Partners does an amazing job in addition to complying with federal regulations for the recovery of heating, used oil, mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). RAD Partners is a leader in end-of-life recycling and promotes the permanent retirement of old, unprofitable refrigerators from our energy inventory. Since RAD’s inception in 2006, the dedication of RAD partners has resulted in significant environmental benefits: recycling more than 9.4 million refrigerators and reducing emissions of hazardous chemicals ozone is 1,996 tons weight-ODP.
The RAD Leadership Award winners were honored in three categories: the RAD Champion Award, the RAD Program Growth Award, and the RAD Ambassador Award.
- The RAD Champion Award recognizes RAD Partners with the highest rates of foam recovery in refrigeration equipment. The ten recipients of the award this year are General Electric Appliances (Louisville, Ky.), Turlock Irrigation District (Turlock, Calif.), Palo Alto Utilities (Palo Alto, Calif.), Silicon Valley Power (Santa Clara, Calif. .) , Modesto Irrigation District (Modesto, Calif.), City of Burbank (Burbank, Calif.), Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (Los Angeles, Calif.), Sacramento Municipal Utility District (Sacramento, Calif.), Georgia Power (Atlanta, Ga.), Power New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM).
- The RAD Program Growth Award aware of the above three RAD Partners and the increasing year-over-year percentage in the processed refrigeration equipment segment. This year’s winners are Delmarva Power (Washington, DC), Georgia Power (Atlanta, Ga.), City of Burbank (Burbank, Calif.).
- The RAD Ambassador Award submitted to Environmental Protection Services (EPS) (Newark, NJ), which has demonstrated the Student’s work and promoted sustainability on a regular basis. EPS is a leader in the RAD network and in their community, starting a key role with the RAD team that emphasized environmental justice and communicating the benefits of RAD to communities, communicating partnerships with new RAD partners, and putting together a new tool recycling partnership model with local partners. , EPS and a Newark community organization can arrange to recycle the units according to RAD’s best practices.
