The Ford plant uses the same technology as electric vehicles to reduce its carbon footprint | Rare Techy


In an interesting twist, the same Ford plant that was used to produce the vehicle’s engines is now using technology to power electric vehicles to reduce the facility’s carbon footprint.

Ford is partnering with energy storage solutions provider Convergent Energy and Power to use lithium-ion battery technology to reduce carbon emissions.

Convergent uses artificial intelligence (AI) powered battery storage to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint while reducing energy costs. Since its founding in 2011, Convergent has continuously advanced the battery energy storage market, confirming that it can play an important role in the transition to a clean energy future.

As the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels becomes increasingly apparent as the global energy crisis escalates, the company is developing energy storage and solar plus storage (solar power with added battery storage) systems to help pave the way for a cleaner future.

Convergent has committed more than $500 million in energy storage and solar plus storage (500 MW/800 MWh) capacity in operation or under development.

Ford’s Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario uses a (4 MW/8 MWh) battery energy storage system to power a portion of the facility during times of peak energy demand. Ford Essex Plant Manager Thomas Reeber talks about how a new energy solution can help the facility, the grid and the community:

The battery storage system offered by Convergent Energy and Power is a strong example of how batteries can support the automotive industry at the factory level while supporting the electric grid that serves Ford and the surrounding community.

Convergent’s new energy solution is a first for Ford, but as automakers look to cut costs (and more importantly, their carbon footprint) wherever they can, it could be the start of a new trend.

It’s interesting to see a facility that builds gas engines that implement EV battery technology to help reduce its carbon footprint and save on energy costs.

At the same time, energy storage can help maximize the benefits of renewable energy. For example, electricity rates are highest during peak hours and, perhaps more importantly, at the most carbon-intensive times.

This is because when energy demand is high, the current solution to meet it is to use outdated gas “peak stations”, which are inefficient, more expensive and produce higher carbon dioxide emissions.

They are called peaking stations because they usually only operate when electricity demand is at its peak. The US relies on more than 1,000 peak power plants powered by natural gas and oil.

However, renewable energy battery storage solutions like those offered by Convergent can enable grid flexibility to reduce costs and reduce air pollution.

Tesla and Elon Musk have introduced and proposed several Megapack projects to avoid adding new peak factories, instead offering stationary energy storage solutions.

The more energy storage options there are, the less we need to rely on fossil fuels. The ability to store energy collected from renewable energy sources such as solar or wind can facilitate the transition to a clean energy sector.

For example, less than 25% of planned large-scale renewable energy projects become commercially operational due to transmission barriers. Battery storage and renewable energy can help solve this problem while reducing energy costs and air pollution.
