CAPE TOWN – The taxi strike is the latest hurdle facing the matric class of 2022 in the Western Cape.
Their journey had already been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing power cuts.
Now in the middle of the final exam, many may struggle to reach the exam hall due to the taxi strike in the next two days.
On Monday, matric students sat for the Life Sciences paper and on Tuesday for Geography.
For many who need public transport to get to school, the two-day taxi strike in the Western Cape adds further stress.
The provincial education department said the move had already adversely affected schools, but initial indications were that there would be no widespread disruption of matriculation exams.
Provincial Education MEC David Maynier said if matriculates cannot reach their designated exam venues, they can go to the nearest exam center or high school with their IDs and exam admission letters.
“We have some candidates who write in unregistered venues and all of them have been helped by our staff to write the exams.”
However, matrics should arrive by 10 am and 3 pm for afternoon exams.
