IRVING, Texas & BROUSSARD, La.–(Business Wire)–Vizient, Inc. Today announced an agreement with SafeSource Direct, LLC. Manufacturer of high-quality, American-made personal protective equipment (PPE) for chemo-rated nitrile gloves. The agreement is Vicient’s latest move to increase supply assurance of critical medical supplies.
Safe Source Direct, a joint venture between Ochsner Health and Trax Development, the Gulf South’s largest health system, launched in 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic to address a national shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). With the addition of 850 jobs in Broussard, Louisiana and plans to create more than 2,200 total American jobs, SafeSource Direct is initially focused on serving the needs of all Ochsner facilities and Vicient members seeking domestic or committed supply. Also, the manufacturer is working towards full vertical integration by sourcing raw materials from nearby facilities to increase PPE resistance.
“The healthcare supply chain is global and highly complex, and remains an open invitation to unexpected disruptions. “Vizient is committed to supporting efforts that help ensure our members are insulated from supply chain disruptions such as those experienced by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Simrit Sandhu, Executive Vice President, Vizient. “As a result of our unique partnership with Ochsner Health, a clinical quality leader, Safe Source Direct is able to manufacture the highest quality nitrile gloves.”
With two manufacturing plants, SafeSource Direct can produce up to 108,000 gloves per hour on multiple operational lines. A dozen lines are targeted to be operational by January 2024, capable of producing more than 2 billion gloves annually, and additional production capacity is available on-site.
“The pandemic has shed light on the significant flaws in sourcing PPE from outside the US, and with this new agreement, we are helping to insulate Vicient members from future price increases, stockouts and international supply chain disruptions,” said Justin Hollingsworth. Safe source directly. “Our healthcare partners had to resort to stockpiling, which was costly and inefficient. We ensure that they can always rely on an available and high-quality supply of PPE.
“We are proud to play a key role in ensuring the supply of high-quality, reliable PPE made in America,” said Regine Willen, system vice president and chief supply chain officer, Supply Chain Network at Ochsner Health. “Having a domestically manufactured supply of PPE mitigates the risks inherent in a global supply chain that cannot always meet demand. This ensures that our PPE is of the highest quality. In addition, the restructuring of PPE production aligns with environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities of ensuring ethical working conditions in PPE plants and eliminating carbon emissions associated with overseas transport.
