With the lack of air conditioning in most homes in the Puget Sound area, many people are turning to portable air conditioners to beat the heat wave.
But if you’re one of those Western Washington residents who just got a portable air conditioner for the first time, you’re wondering how to get the most out of it — so you don’t waste energy, and or break the bank.
Isaac Spice, manager of the Woodinville location of McLendon Hardware, said portable air conditioners and box fans are the most popular right now among customers looking for cooling.

He offers some advice for those new to air conditioning – such as placing a box fan in a window across the room from the ducted air.
“Build a wind tunnel. So if you have an AC or an air conditioner, you want a box that blows that hot air out of your home,” Spice said. “So you’re creating a vacuum.”
Cooling an entire house or apartment takes a lot of energy, so Spice recommends focusing only on the area of the home you use, and closing the doors of rooms you don’t. spend time.
“The biggest mistake, one, is to try to create that ventilation. Second is to block unused spaces in the home so you don’t get cold unexpectedly,” he advises.
However, this does not mean that only one room in the house should be air-conditioned, such as a room air conditioner that can help you avoid a heat wave.
“If you’re just cooling a room and there’s no other place for that air, you’re just wasting power,” he said.
Additionally, people should use air conditioning. Set the temperature not to a minimum number, but to what is considered normal room temperature. Compared to 90 degrees, 70 degrees is very refreshing, Spice said.
“A lot of customers don’t know that every air unit has a thermostat. So you set it to the temperature you like, and you just let it… set it to 70 degrees and let it do its thing,” the said Spice. “It’s going to get to 70, not 69, 68 degrees.”
As the temperature remains high for the next few days, it is better not to wait if you are serious about getting a portable AC.
“The air conditioners, and the air… [sales] it’s blowing up,” Spice said. “We’ve ordered everything available.”
He recommends that people buy products online ahead of time and pick them up in the store, so they don’t go to waste. For now, however, it looks good for buyers.
“They’re doing well, but I have a lot [in stock] — I have seen the worst,” he said.
